Children’s First Dental Visit

Our office provides the DENTAL HOME for children six months to one year of age. Our profession defines this as “the ongoing relationship between the dentist who is the primary dental care provider and the patient, which includes comprehensive oral health care, beginning no later than age 1 in a continuously accessible, coordinated and family-centered way.” If your child is older than this, we like to introduce them to our office by having you bring them with you to one of your checkup appointments. All conversations and actions with children should reflect a positive and fun experience at the dentist. Morning appointments are best while after school appointments are more difficult with tired children. On most first appointments we will do a complete examination, take any necessary x-rays, clean their teeth, and give them a topical fluoride varnish treatment.

Avoid expressions like "it will only be a short time", "be brave", "you can have a reward if you are good", etc. Do not make promises of what will happen except they should have fun. Most children do better when the parents wait in the waiting room during the appointment. Remember that children act out the emotions of their parents in an amplified manner.

Check out our "Reference Library" and "Emergency Procedures" for more information about children's dental health.
